Sarah Foster, 27, a teacher at Louis M. Klein Middle School in the Harrison school district was hit about 5:50 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15 at East 37th St. and Third Ave. in the Murray Hill section, said the NYPD.
Foster, of Manhattan, who attended private high school in Hamden, Conn., was found by NYPD officers lying on the roadway with trauma about the body, police said.
EMS responded to the location and pronounced Foster dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad determined that Foster was attempting to cross East 37 Street northbound when she was struck by a delivery truck which was traveling northbound on Third Avenue and attempting to make a turn westbound on East 37 Street, the NYPD said.
Harrison School District Superintendent Louis N. Wool sent a letter to parents about the beloved teacher.
"Sarah was an extraordinarily warm, talented and dedicated young teacher," Wool said in the letter. We extend our deepest condolences to Sarah's family."
A message was sent to middle school parents earlier today. Students were informed by their teachers during class meetings, Wool said. Psychological and counseling services are providing support to students, teachers, and staff. They will remain available throughout the weekend.
"Our entire Harrison school community joins together in supporting our middle school as they deal with this terrible loss," he added.
The driver, Steven McDermott, 51, of Brooklyn, remained on the scene, police said. Following an investigation, he was arrested and charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care.
